Macclenny, Glen St. Mary, Sanderson, Baxter Culyer, Olustee, Manning, Margaretta, and Taylor A small town environment with big city convenience. (more...)
Baker County Today is a community-service portal connecting Baker County's Internet community one website at a time.
March of 1980 is when Glen St Mary became my new home. I though I had moved to a metropolis! There was Fraser's Food Store, a laundry mat, Glen St Mary Supermarket, and Glen Cash Store. Within a short distance was Winn-Dixie, TG&Y, Dutch's Pizza, and Margie's Restaurant. These were luxuries to a young girl from a small rural community in Florida's Big Bend.
Now, having lived in Baker County longer than anywhere else, I guess makes it officially my home. Five people I met during the first year of living in Glen St. Mary made an impact on my life and they hold a special place in my heart. Their generous acts of kindness to me when I was a new resident to Baker County have been long remembered. Through the years since 1980, I have tried to pass forward to Baker County newcomers the same kindness that these five people have given me.
Each Sunday at the old Glen Baptist Church, Judy McKendree made an special effort to greet me and give me a hug. She knew that my baby girl and I were often alone during the week (my husband was a truck driver) and that I missed my family. She called regularly to see how I was getting along and if I needed anything. On my wedding anniversary, she brought to me everything for a special dinner, including a book to read later. Judy's kindness and encouragement taught me true Christian love through her actions.
Robin (Lyons) Mobley and I met at the Glen laundrymat. She was studying and I was washing diapers. It was so easy to talk to Robin because she listened. She encouraged and helped me to believe in myself. Robin's inspiration has helped me to reach higher for life's treasures.
No one could have better neighbors than Robert and Elouise (Burnham) Moore. They became like family to me. As a matter of fact, Elouise has so many relatives in Baker County, what's one more. Robert and Elouise are the kind of people you can depend on. We have shared many hours of laughter and some of sorrow. They are my dear friends.
After church on Sunday, Mrs. Naomi Roberson also ate lunch at Margie's Restaurant. Many times, she asked if she could hold the baby for me while I ate. Her graciousness allowed me to enjoy myself while I ate my lunch. Mrs. Naomi's outstretched gentle hands have given so much to so many through the years and I most fortunate to have my life cross paths with hers.
These special people are the first reasons that I love Baker County and have made it my home. BakerCountyToday.com was created to welcome people to Baker County and share a bit of Baker history, current events, and growth into a new era.
