LOCATION
Baker County is located 20 minutes west of Jacksonville.  The county is 131 miles east of Tallahassee (Florida's Capitol and home of Florida State University) and 45 miles north of Gainesville (home of the University of Florida). The north side of the county borders Georgia. The county has three square miles of water. The average January temperature is 55.0 degrees F. and the average August temperature is 81.2 degrees F. The average rainfall is 49.27 inches.

Macclenny is the county seat of Baker County (Baker County Courthouse, right).  Interstate 10 crosses Baker County east and west with five county interchanges. Highway 90 runs east and west through the town of Macclenny, Glen St. Mary, Sanderson, and Olustee.

CHURCHES
Baker County hosts a variety of churches representing most denominations. A local Ministerial Alliance meets on a periodic basis.

COMMERCE
Baker has a progressive  business community.  The county's 585 square miles are actively promoted by the local Chamber of Commerce which has drawn to this area such businesses as Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Sanderson Pipe, Hanson Roof Tiles, and numerous residential developments.

EDUCATION
Baker County's progressive public educational system provides Pre-K through 12th grade in six schools. Educational leaders, teachers, and non-instructional employees are dedicated to providing a safe school environment and the necessary educational tools for each student to reach his or her full academic potential for the workplace and a college environment. Parental involvement is encouraged and welcomed.

GOVERNMENT AND SERVICES
The Board of County Commissioners is a five member board elected to represent the citizens of Baker County. Each member represents a district, but is elected county-wide. The Commission establishes policies and appoints a County Administrator to implement the policies and manage the operation of Baker County. The Commission adopts the millage rate annually and approves the budget, which determines the expenditures and revenue necessary to operate all county departments. HEALTH CARE
Health care services include two hospitals, two nursing facilities, a health department, emergency rescue services, physicians, and dentists.

LIBRARY
Emily Taber Public Library is a member of the New River Public Library Cooperative supporting library services in Baker and surrounding Bradford and Union Counties.

Local news is covered by  and a major Jacksonville newspaper.  A free weekly journal is mailed to all homes in the county. There are two local FM radio stations in addition to the AM/FM radio stations in Jacksonville, Gainesville, Fernandina, and the surrounding areas.

TRANSPORTATION
Interstate 10 and U.S. 90 run east and west through the Baker County. Several state roads run north, providing access to the state of Georgia, and south to Gainesville, Orlando, and Tampa. CSX Transportation offers rail service on a main tract route east and west through Macclenny. Jacksonville International Airport is 40 minutes from Baker County, Lake City Municipal Airport is 30 minutes away, and two other airfields, Craig and Herlong, are located in Jacksonville. Baker County also has two private airfields.
