Baker, a rural Northeast Florida county, has held fast to the small town atmosphere and family traditions of Macclenny, Glen St. Mary, Sanderson, Olustee, Taylor, Cuyler, Baxter, Margaretta, and Manning, Florida.
Baker County is 131 miles east of Tallahassee (Florida's Capitol and home of Florida State University) and 45 miles north of Gainesville (home of the University of Florida).
The north
side of the county borders Georgia and the east side borders Jacksonville (Duval County).

History of Baker County
Settle back and enjoy the facts and recollections of Baker County as it was yesterday. The territory we call Baker County was originally inhabited by Seminole Indians who lived in the vast swamplands. Since the Indians knew little about agriculture, their main sources of food supply were hunting and fishing. Prior to the Civil War, as
new people settled into the territory they lived by hunting and farming. After the Civil War, people living farther north were having a difficult time making a living, so they moved to this area where they found it easier to obtain employment. More>>>

Once Upon A Lifetime

LaViece Moore-Fraser Smallwood is a former feature writer and columnist for The Florida Times Union. She has written nine books on Baker County families that can be found online under Carl Mobley's website. She is the writer of the series, Once Upon A Lifetime in Baker County, Florida. She is currently the director of Baker County Heritage Park and Museums on south Lowder Street where the preservation of local and area history is being collected and displayed.
